Bakeries in Brooklyn are no joke. From old-school generational Italian bakeries, French bakeries, fusion bakeries to little shops just selling sweet treats and delicious fresh baked bread, our borough is LOADED!

In fact, Brooklyn is a powerhouse for baked goods and bread. From sugar-filled treats to savory loaves of lard bread, the bakeries in Brooklyn are some of the most famous in the world. After all, this is where the famous Brooklyn Blackout Cake originated! This popular dessert combines layers of chocolate pudding, frosting, and cake crumbles to create a delicious dessert.

Brooklyn is also home to the famous Ebinger’s Bakery, which closed down in 1972. Although this is originally where the blackout cake came from, many bakeries in Brooklyn have followed in their footsteps and created their own recipes.

A fun fact about this bakery in Brooklyn, Ebinger’s created the Brooklyn Blackout Cake in recognition of the mandatory blackout drills to protect Navy Yard from enemy planes during World War II which employed over 40,000 workers.

Needless to say, the cake was popularized and stuck around even after the war.

Below are the 25 best bakeries in Brooklyn mixing in the old-school family-run mom and pop shops to the new kids in town shaking things up with their legendary treats and bread.

Whether you’re craving a retro scene or an OG must-see, these bakeries all offer something that you won’t be able to find anywhere else!

  1. Any list omitting Almondine in Dumbo has no interest for me. Try the Lemon Raspberry Pistachio cake…or whatever catches your eye. Also, the best chocolate cake for my money is at The Chocolate Room on Court St. Very sweet masks poor ingredients and these two show great restraint while using the finest ingredients.

  2. Gotta visit Il Fornaretto on 17th Ave. and 76th street. Excellent Semolina Twist, Olive Bread and Focaccia Barese……..Don’t leave it off the list next time!!

  3. You should include Savarese Italian pastry shoppe which has been in same location since 1918 and Jean Danet pastry shoppe also in same location for over 40 years

  4. Forgot all about ave N mill basin. Best lobster tail(pastry) not all about the bread , enough with cupcakes. Good old school standards that have lasted hundreds of years.
